Union of Priests & Religious
The Missionary Union of Priests and Religious seeks to increase awareness of the Church's worldwide mission among people engaged in pastoral ministry.
History
The Union was set up by Fr Paolo Manna, a missionary in Burma, who was saddened by the Clergy's indifference to the work of the missionaries.
He set up the Union to inform priests about the evangelisation of the world and to promote knowledge of the Missions and to encourage prayer for them. It was recognised by Pope Benedict XV in 1916 and was declared pontifical by Pope Pius XII in 1956. Membership now not only includes priests, but religious and lay people who wish to pray for the missionary activity of the Church.
Encouraging Prayer and Reflection
In keeping with the spirit of the Society a prayer booklet entitled, 'Prayers and Reflections' is published in January each year. 'Prayers and Reflections' is developed with the aim of provoking spiritual thought and providing comfort to the sick and the housebound through prayer.
